concrete sculpture
(2020)

001                                    In exploring the materiality and process of casting with concrete, I created a geometric vessel to test a three part mould system. Concrete is such a harsh and unforgiving material, but it has an incredible plasticity when it is first made, allowing for it to be sculpted into smooth and elegant curves.

 002
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome of this piece as I expected it to fall completely apart.

003                                    I was impatient with the casting process, allowing the concrete mixture to become far too thick and applying too much lubricant resulted in creating these cracks and irregular surface properties. I find these moments to be quite beautiful, reminiscent of some of the Shigaraki wares with thi 'imperfect' aesthetic.

004                                    The main core did not release from the concrete, but I found that the plastic infill inside of the core provided a stable structure for the flower or plant to rest in, acting like a ikebana flower stand.

005                                   The process required a three part 3D printed mould with a simple design with a removable core and walls. The cast separated easily from the walls, but not the core as it did not have enough taper, and had too much friction to be released
